This is a list of terms used in navies, including merchant navies.
[edit] C
- Commodore: the highest commissioned rank below flag officer; originally used to denote the commander of a squadron of ships, now also often used to denote the senior member of a yacht club
[edit] E
- Ensign: a flag flown from the stern of a vessel to denote nationality; also the lowest rank of commissioned officer in the United States Navy
[edit] F
- Flag officer: a senior naval rank, usually an Admiral, from the personal standard flown form the mast head of the flagship
- Flagship: the vessel carrying the commanding officer of a naval fleet or possibly a flotilla
- fleet: a substantial group of ships, generally containing at least one capital ship, and commanded by a flag officer
- flotilla: a smaller group of ships
[edit] M
- Maintenance and Repair or MAR: A term used to denote time spent on the proper upkeep of equipment, and material to keep them in good working order. M&R is a vital but often hated duty of enlisted men. Without the proper performance of Maintenance and Repair the safety of the ship's crew and officers would be put at risk
[edit] S
- scuttling: to deliberately sink a vessel, for example to avoid capture by the enemy
- ship: (a) a vessel above a certain arbitrary size, but generally large enough to require multiple crew, have two or more decks, more than one engine or more than two masts, or carry significant quantities of cargo or passengers; (b) to take on board, possibly involuntarily (to ship water is to have water come in via a damaged hull, portholes or over the sides)
- stricken: either (a) struck from the Navy List (i.e. removed from military service, and fate no longer recorded; this usually means scrapped) or (b) a state of irreparable damage for a vessel. When a ship is stricken (sense (a)), its national prefix (if any) is removed and its name and hull classification symbol or pennant number are modified with the prefix "ex-".
[edit] V
- vessel: Any boat or ship
