Talk:List of aircraft by category

[edit] CAS/COIN
I tend to deprecate having "CAS/COIN" as a separate category as it is almost totally subsumed by the "Bombers, Strike, Ground attack, gunships" category, and what isn't covered by that (e.g., FAC and perhaps observation aircraft) would/should fall under "Reconnaissance aircraft". Since some aircraft already fall under more than one category (due to being multirole or through variants), this just adds more to keep up with.
Is the idea of this list to cover general categories only or to provide categories to cover any way someone might want to look at them? Askari Mark | Talk 16:07, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] back to basics
isn't there a more basic categorisation that is missing entirely? where does a blimp/zepplin fit into this? what about gliders and hot-air ballons? what about helicopters? there needs to be a more basic categorisation than things like "agricultural/business" (both types of plane, basically, and not even neccesarily different types of plane, just different functions). would be good to have all types listed. --naught101 02:20, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
- I suspect one of two things is going on here. Either the universal-wording bigots have corrupted the term "aircraft" as a non-regional term for "airplane/aeroplane" (and I think "List of fixed-wing aircraft by category" would be horribly awkward as a title), or the original author of the list simply overlooked/ignored the overloading of the term "category". As the FAA and ICAO both use "category" in a very specific way, perhaps the word "category" here would be better as "function" or "use", as that's really what the breakdown seems to be.
- I also agree that if the term "aircraft" is going to be kept, this list needs to be inclusive of all aircraft and not punt when discussing gliders (sailplanes -- "See List of Sailplanes") and not ignore airships, powered-lift aircraft, and balloons entirely.--chris.lawson 18:03, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
