- Years should not be wikied. We don't do this on the other pages, and there's a good reason. These are just lists, we don't need them showing up in what links here.
- Your methods to wiki links doesn't work. It's deleting things that shouldn't be deleted and adding random broken links throughout.
If you're going to do this, 1) get consensus that it's something we should do, 2) fix your method so you don't screw everything up, and 3) do it to all the pages.

Anthony, please stop reverting me. It is for good reason that I AM slowly working through these lists and wikifying them - there's still A LOT of work to do, and I find it very hard to appreciate it if you deliberately rip up the many hours I've put into this. Believe me, wikifying dates takes A LOT of time. If you want to stop me, I request that you get consensus on that - and I'll abide by that. So far the only complaint I've heard is yours. One complaint does not constitute a veto - unless it comes from Jimbo, that is. By the way, I regard your language ("Destruction") as inflammatory, and it does not encourage me to just give up. I have reverted you again. If links are screwed up, fix them, but don't wipe out the hours and hours of hard work I've put in. David Cannon 11:51, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Your script is broken. It is inserting ] and [ in completely inappropriate spots and it is removing parentheses. I can only describe that as destruction. As for who needs to find consensus, you are the one that is trying to change the de-facto standard, so it is you that needs to get consensus. As you saw I started fixing them but there are far too many. I'm not your baby-sitter, when your edit causes more destruction than good I'm not going to pick through it trying to find the value. Furthermore, I see nothing good at all in your edit, other than the one change which I reinstated. If you spent hours and hours doing this work, then it is you that wasted your time, not me. David, people have had this discussion a couple times, and the outcome was to not wikify the years; they're not useful to readers, they make the pages take longer to edit and display, and the "what links here" for a year article gets cluttered up with "list of"s (pointlessly, because every list will likely mention every year), and making more work to find the articles for which the year really matters. Ditto for terms in the notations. I can relate to the urge to wikilink everything (people usually accuse me of overlinking), but in the lists of people it's counterproductive with no tangible benefit. Stan 22:03, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)

- Okay then, I get the message. I still think wikifying the dates serves a useful purpose -- I have sometimes used the wikilinks to go to birth and death years to "register" names found in these lists. For some reason, the wikilink to Will Self has really been going to Wilhelm I of Germany for the entire existence of this article, almost three and a half years, without anyone noticing. I fixed it when I noticed it while adding Seela Sella. JIP | Talk 09:52, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
