Little Brown Fucking Machine, or "LBFM", is a derogatory slang term for a Philipino woman considered primarily or exclusively as a sex object.[1] The term originally described the local women that worked the bars and brothels around the United States Navy and United States Air Force bases in the Manila area during the Vietnam War.[citation needed] The term gained widespread usage during the 1970s and 1980s and eventually was also used for any non-white sex worker in a poor area, notably either in Asia or Central America (including Mexico).[citation needed] The term is still used among American military men, most notably in the Navy.[citation needed] An alternative meaning for LBFM is "Little Brown Fuck Monkey". If the letters "-PBR" are also used, they mean "Powered By Rice"
The term itself is dehumanizing and used to indicate that the women in question aren't really regarded as "people" as much as they are walking sex toys. For married military men stationed overseas for extended periods of time, having an LBFM move into their off-base quarters as a maid/girlfriend was frequently not considered adultery in the same sense that a relationship with an American servicewoman would be. The cultural difference between the two was commonly considered to be too great for any meaningful relationship to exist, so sex with the LBFM was essentially considered to be masturbation at an emotional level.[citation needed]
For the women so regarded, the term was considered to be highly insulting. Many of these women hoped to marry their GI boyfriends and frequently bore their children.
