Lord Commander Solar Macharius
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the fictional universe of Warhammer 40,000, Lord Commander Solar Macharius was a famous commander of the Imperial Guard. His conquest was only halted by the refusal of his men to continue. This refusal arose due to the closing border of the psychic protection of the Emperor as they entered into deep space. After the death of Macharius, his empire split up as his generals fought over the land, undoing much of what Macharius had strived to achieve. It is said that when Macharius learned that he would be unable to conquer any more worlds in the name of the Emperor, he fell to his knees and wept.
The rules for this character are no longer in print, but are available on the Internet on the Games Workshop website. [1]
Macharius is based on Alexander the Great.
Many things and places throughout the Imperium have been named in honor of the commander, including the Imperial Navy vessel Lord Solar Macharius commanded by Captain Leoten Semper in the Black Library novel "Execution Hour", and the battleship Macharia Victrix in the novel "Soul Drinkers". He is also believed to have been canonized as a saint, according to the newer Imperial Guard codex. The planet Macharia, in the Cadian system, was destroyed by Abaddon's Planet Killer during the 13th Black Crusade.
[edit] Title/name confusion
In older Imperial Guard codexes, it was implied that Solar Macharius was his name, and that his rank was Lord Commander; however, revelations of "Lord Solar" being an auxiliary title for Warmaster (the latter held by the cursed traitor Horus, and thus rarely used) have led to questions as to whether "Solar" was part of his title, or part of his name. The newer Imperial Guard codex mentions the title of Lord Solar "most gloriously being held by St. Macharius", and the actual recorded dialogue (in the older Imperial Guard codex) between him and his deputy commander, General Sejanus, refers to him as "the Lord Solar".
