[edit] Writing and inspiration
Thicke stated that he penned "Lost Without U" while wallowing in self-pity. The single was written after the release of his first album and while he was on tour. It was at a time he was feeling insecure and wasn't having much commercial success with his music. "I was going through an insecure period and wanted my lady to tell me how fabulous and how sexy and how wonderful I am." [1]
[edit] Music video
Thicke appears in the music video of "Lost Without U" with his wife, actress Paula Patton. Fearful that the video for this single would be the last one he would ever make, Thicke choose to cast his wife as the leading lady in the music video as a way to tell the truth and represent how the last few years of his life has been.[1] However, with the success of "Lost Without U" Thicke has stated that he will be filming a new video for the next, currently unknown, single from his current album The Evolution of Robin Thicke.[1] The video is currently on Big Ten rotation on MTV, where it is also a Discover and Download artist.
[edit] Chart performance
To date, "Lost Without U" remains Robin Thicke's most successful single on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, reaching number one on that chart on February 24, 2007, becoming his first number one single on any chart.[2] One week later, with the March 3rd issue of Billboard magazine, the single also peaked at number one on two other Billboard charts; Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Adult R&B Airplay, simultaneously topping all three charts that week. So far the single has spent seven consecutive weeks at number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and six consecutive weeks on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Adult R&B Airplay charts. He became the first white male artist to top the R&B charts since George Michael. The single is also successful on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number fourteen to date. However, since it is his first single from The Evolution of Robin Thicke to chart, it has been considered to be his biggest hit to date. This song's heavy promotion also marks the significant spike in the sales of The Evolution of Robin Thicke.
