Low Impact Development
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A concept that began in Prince George's County, Maryland in 1990, Low Impact Development (LID) began as an alternative to traditional best management practices. Officials found that the traditional practices were not cost-effective and the results did not meet water-quality goals.
The main system utilized by LID is the diversion of runoff from impervious surfaces such as parking lots and roofs to bioretention areas, such as a rain garden. The concept has received attention from the EPA and is used as a case study on the EPA website. Various local, state, and federal agency programs have used materials supplied by the LID Center (a non-profit group dedicated to advancing the practice).
