Low Rider is a song written by the band War and appearing on their album Why Can't We Be Friends?, released in 1975. It reached number one on the Billboard R&B charts and peaked at number 35 on the Pop Singles chart.
This song has been covered by Exodus, Cypress Hill, Quando Quango, Barry White, Steve Edmonds, JFA, KoЯn, Latin Alliance, and Baby G & Rock Box (titled "New Lowrider"). It was featured on the first compilation in the Lowrider Soundtrack series. War's "Low Rider" was also significantly sampled by The Beastie Boys for their track "Slow Ride" on the 1986 album Licensed to Ill.
The song was featured in nine movies, including the Cheech and Chong series, Robots, 21 Grams, Dazed and Confused, Paulie, Beverly Hills Ninja, A Knight's Tale, the 2000 remake of Gone in Sixty Seconds, and Friday.
Low Rider is also the theme song for The George Lopez Show and for its star's standup appearances.
Low Rider and is featured in the video games Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (playing on Master Sounds 98.3) and Driver: Parallel Lines. Also, the Los Angeles Dodgers use this song as a theme song for player Nomar Garciaparra at Dodger Stadium when he comes up to bat, and Marmite have used a version of the tune with alternate lyrics in their television adverts.
Low Rider was also sampled by The Offspring in their lead single Original Prankster.
Low Rider was played to the Crew of STS-116 (Discovery) for Pilot William 'Billy O' Ofelein' as a wake up call.
The writers and performers of Low Rider now have a band called Lowrider Band consisting of Lee Oskar, Howard E. Scott, B.B. Dickerson and Harold Brown.
