Lower Styria

Lower Styria (Slovenian: Spodnja Štajerska; German: Untersteiermark; Latin: Styria) is a region in northeastern Slovenia, comprising the southern third of the former Duchy of Styria. The northern two-thirds of the former duchy lie in southeastern Austria and are known as Upper Styria. The Duchy of Styria was divided in 1918 after World War I, with the Kingdom of Yugoslavia receiving Lower Styria. Slovenia gained independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991.
Lower Styria has no official status as an administrative unit within Slovenia (although the new low is establishing provincial administrative units, however it did not come into force yet (feb 2007)), although the association with the informal province (Slovenian pokrajina) is very common. Lower Styria is famous for its white wine.
The capital of Lower Styria is Maribor (from German: Marburg an der Drau). Other cities include Celje (Cilli) and Ptuj (Pettau).
In Slovenia, it is simply referred to as Štajerska, i.e. "Styria".
