Lungern is a municipality in the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland. It has a population of 1950 by the end of 2005. Lungerersee is located within the municipality.

[edit] Geographie
The village of Lungern is situated on 750 metres over sea leavel (2460 feets) in the highest part of the canton of Obwalden, on the lake of Lungern and on the foot of the Brünig-Pass. As highest village of the Sarneraa-Valley it is situated in a basin, which is open toward north only and is surrounded on all other sides by steep and woody inclinations and rocks. The municipal district of Lungern has an area of 4633 hectares (11'400 acres), of which 648 hectares (1690 acres) meadow and tilled land, 1920 hectares (4740 acres) pastureland, and 1597 hectares (3950 acres) wood area, meanwhile 291 hectares (720 acres) constitute the unproductive area.
The village of Lungern is divided into three districts: On the northern part of the lake Kaiserstuhl/Bürglen is situated, meanwhile the essentiel town-center has been established and extended on the east side of the lake. The hamlet Obsee is situated on the south side of the lake and it might be the best maintained part of the old village. In that part you will still find old houses in their original structure and pattern.

His first legal proof of authenticity will be founded for the town of Lungern in the year 1275 in a tax-register of the diocese of the bishop of Konstanz in Germany.
At the end of the 18th century, the population of Lungern had sinked the lake with great effort and during many years in order to improve the living conditions. With that work it was possible to win land for the agriculture, for dwelling houses and a sawmill. Not even 80 years later the so hard winned land hat to delivered to be dammed up again. In the year 1920 the a company named CKW started with running a power station located at the lake. Nowadays the local power station (EWO) is producing electric energy with the power of the wather of the Lungerersee.

Nowadays the village of Lungern has about 1950 inhabitants. The population does not either grown or take off, so there is a rise in the ratio of old people to total population. In fact from the total population of Lungern ther are 17.5% in the pension-age, however the average of our canton lays at 12%. On the princple that the possibilites of work are limited this will even be growing in the future.

In economics regards the agriculture and forestry and also wood works are predominant. This yields the division of working population as follows:

The agriculture is carrying exclusively on cattle-breeding and dairy-farming. All our agriculture farms are cultivated by ournativ highlanders, and their main part is not situated in the bottom but on the inclinations of the valley.
