M. Lee Pelton

Dr. M. Lee Pelton is the president of Willamette University (as of September 2006), which is the oldest university in the United States west of the Mississippi River. He is the first African-American president since the university's founding in 1842.
Pelton was appointed as Willamette's 22nd president in 1999. He focused his efforts as Willamette University president towards strengthening the university's academic standing, improving student life, and increasing diversity on campus. As of September 2006, Willamette is the most racially and ethnically diverse undergraduate institution in Oregon.
Additionally, Pelton also holds positions on several educational boards and committees: the American Council on Education, the Harvard University Board of Overseers, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and the Oregon Symphony, among others.
Previously, Pelton has served as dean of Colgate University, Dartmouth College, and one of Harvard's 13 undergraduate colleges.
Lee Pelton earned his doctorate from Harvard University and his undergraduate degree (1974, magna cum laude) in English and psychology from Wichita State University.
