M4 (Star Trek)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the fictional Star Trek universe, M4 is a Robot that appeared in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Requiem for Methuselah".
M4 was designed and constructed on Holberg 917G, by the reclusive Mr. Flint. It served as his personal butler, gardener, Housekeeper, security sentry and overall Handyman. He bears more than a casual resemblance (in role only) to Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet.
M4 had an anti-grav unit that allowed it to hover approximately one meter off the ground. It could travel in all three dimensions with great diversity. It had sophisticated computer components that allowed it to analyze raw components and process them into new compounds and mixtures.
M4 also had sophisticated weapons such as forcefield screens, energy beams, and the ability to nullify other hightech weapons around it.
M4 was totally under the control of Mr. Flint and to a lesser extent by Rayna Kapec. M4 was designed by Flint to protect his private domain on planet Holberg 917G which was setup as a personal private retreat. He wanted to protect the planet from: "The foolish, the meddlers, and the seekers". In 2269 the M4 Robot had several times interpreted the actions of the crew of the starship Enterprise as hostile. On one occasion Mr. Spock was lucky enough to surprise the unit and destroy it before it could sense his phaser and deactivate it. On the same occasion Rayna Kapek had attempted to order the unit to "Stand Down" to no avail. Flint also interceded on the crew's behalf before M4 could act. When Mr. Spock apparently destroyed the unit another took it's place almost immediately in which Mr. Flint casually responds: "Too useful a device to be without".
[edit] Note
This M4 should not be confused with the fourth iteration of the M5 computer system based on "multitronic" technology designed and constructed by Dr. Richard Daystrom.
[edit] Misc
- The M4 unit was constructed from remnants of the Nomad (Star Trek) Space Probe from the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "The Changeling".
