Macungie, Pennsylvania

Macungie is a borough in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. Macungie is a suburb of Allentown, Pennsylvania in the Lehigh Valley region of the state.
The population of the borough was 3,039 at the 2000 census. Macungie is named after the Lenape word "Maguntsche", which means "feeding place for bears". The bear is often utilized as a symbol of Macungie.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 3,039 people, 1,366 households, and 835 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,185.2/km² (3,057.0/mi²). There were 1,418 housing units at an average density of 553.0/km² (1,426.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 94.87% White, 1.35% African American, 0.07% Native American, 2.11% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.82% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.35% of the population.
There were 1,366 households out of which 26.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.8% were non-families. 31.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.81.
In the borough the population was spread out with 20.5% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 33.4% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $51,721, and the median income for a family was $56,848. Males had a median income of $44,821 versus $34,722 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $26,965. About 1.7% of families and 3.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.1% of those under age 18 and 6.0% of those age 65 or over.

Macungie is the global headquarters for Allen Organ, a global manufacturer and distributor of organs, and the manufacturing facility of Mack Trucks, a leading truck manufacturer.

Macungie is part of the East Penn School District. Students in grades nine through 12 attend Emmaus High School in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. Both of the East Penn School District's middle schools for grades six through eight, Eyer Middle School and Lower Macungie Middle School, are located in Macungie.

Bear Creek Ski and Recreation Area, a locally popular ski resort, is located just outside Macungie.
