Talk:Maccabi Tel Aviv (basketball)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] In Winter, Summer, Autumn and the Spring
I moved the name of the club from Maccabi Tel-Aviv (basketball) to Maccabi Tel Aviv (basketball) because Tel Aviv is officially written without a hyphen (e.g. in Tel Aviv-Yafo, a combination of two cities), both for the city and the club [2]. In the case of the Hebrew transciption I kept the hyphen as it is in the official logo. The Hebrew Wikipedia, however, correctly calls the article "מכבי תל אביב (כדורסל)". I do not object to a change of the Hebrew text by another, but do not have enough indicators to do it myself. It is officially called תל אביב outside the logo, like the name of the city. [edit] Dual Citizenship
I think dual citizenship should be handled as follows:
- for the current roster, the first flag should be for the nationality under which the player plays (as in
Derrick Sharp -- that is, Derrick Sharp plays as an Israeli citizen and counts under Euroleague rules as an Israeli, not an American).
- for historical rosters, the first flag should be the player's first citizenship (usually place of birth), while the second flag should be the acquired/naturalized citizenship (as in
Derrick Sharp -- that is, Derrick Sharp is a born American citizen, and acquired Israeli citizenship).
- there should be a space between the flags (as in
not
).
Let me know what you think -- I think this will help consistency.

[edit] Maccabi Tel Aviv (basketball) Championship Rosters
The section which includes the 1977, 1981, 2004 and 2005 championship squads is a little long and probably requires its own article. I suggest that the European Championship Squads section be moved to a new article called "Maccabi Tel Aviv (basketball) Championship Rosters" (hyperlink: Maccabi Tel Aviv (basketball) Championship Rosters).
Let me know what you think.

- I agree that these past rosters are out of place here. But I'm not sure "Maccabi Tel Aviv (basketball) Championship Rosters" is a good idea... Perhaps something like "List of players of Maccabi Tel Aviv (basketball)", with list of all past and current players and with sections for prominent past rosters ? Uhm... not sure either... - Also... some "famous past players" are not that famous IMHO (say Popa or Penney), and at least one is not exactly past (Vujcic). Of the "players who moved to the NBA" most actually were NBA players before signing with Maccabi. Bukvoed 14:08, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

- Thanks for your comments Bukvoed -- I agree that the current and even my proposed article is problematic. Perhaps the new article should be Maccabi Tel Aviv (basketball) - Past Rosters, which would include a section at the bottom for "unclassified" players (i.e. who played for Maccabi, but we are not sure what year(s)...).
-
- The main team article would link to the Past Rosters article. The main team article could also have a small table of famous past players (Tal Brody, Miki Berkovitch, Oded Katash, etc) who are well known outside of Israel. I guess this raises the problem of who is "famous" -- some former players are huge in Israel, known in Europe, but just another NBA player in the US...
