[edit] History
In 1987, the Madison County Board of Education made the decision to build a new high school in the southern section of the County. The only county high school (Madison Central) was overcrowded. Madison Central housed 1800 students in facilities that were built in 1954 to serve a smaller student body. Southern was completed in the summer of 1988 and opened its doors in August, 1988. The school is attached to Red Foley Middle School and is comprised of two buildings; the Russell Roberts Building and the James B. Moores Building (which were recently connected by the newly built auditorium).
Southern's first principal was Jesse Ward (1988-2001) and its first vice-principal was Charles Combs (1988-1996). Southern's first athletic director was James R. Williams (who died in 1990). The football stadium is named in his honor. Ward was replaced by Barbara Disney who served as principal from 2001-2004. The current principal, Hubert Broaddus, is in his third year and will retire in June. Tony Cox (former Southern basketball coach) served as vice-principal from 1996-2001. Bob Beck served as assistant principal from 1996-2002 and athletic director from 1997-2002. Roy Evans was Southern's athletic director from 1991-1997.
Southern's football field is named after former board member John Gilliam and its athletic complex is named for former board member Linda R. Coyle.
