Mahayag is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 42,462 people in 8,026 households.

Mahayag is politically subdivided into 29 barangays.
In order to plainly comprehend how Mahayag become a municipality, one requires a diligent retrospect of its evolution from being a mere Sitio Dao of Barangay Mahayag which was an unfamiliar forested area during post-war era. That time, its mother municipality of Molave was then a barangay of the municipality of Aurora. Mahayag was one of the component barangays when Campo 7 (former name & town site of Molave) was created into a municipality in 1949.Mahayag was officially created as a municipality on March 9, 1960, pursuant to Executive Order # 393 by former President Carlos P. Mahayag have been the center of the Salug Valley area and serves as the gateway to Dipolog, Pagadian and Ozamiz City. Its topograhical location is very conducive to vacation and other family affairs.
Mahayag offers a wide array of fresh lush vegetation and a variety of choices in its mountain terrains best for mountain climbing and picnics.
Situated at the foot of Mount Malindang they too offer every fresh water resorts located at barangay Tuburan. Malindang mountain resort, Eriberta Swimming Pool and Fanilag resort to name few, offers affordable accomodation with high quality of hospitality. Facts: 1. the present mayor is my 8th municipal mayor. 2. total population as of year 2000 is 42,462, with total registered voters of 21,534. 3. have 29 barangays and 3 sitios. 4. have several tourist spots- the cave at Barangay Kaangayan and the 3 natural spring resorts at Barangay Tuburan (come and visit!!!) 5.
