Malad (Marathi:मालाड) is the name of a railway station on the Mumbai suburban railway on the Western Railway (India) railway line. It is a suburb of Mumbai.
Apart from the original Maharashtrian settlers, the suburb has a considerable population of Catholics, Gujaratis, South Indians, Marwaris and Punjabis. Real estate in the west is more expensive than in the east.
Originally, much of the land in the west was owned by East Indian families and was used primarily for agriculture. In the 1970s many of them sold their lands to real estate developers.
One of the most prominent localities in Malad (West) is the village called Orlem (original Marathi name - Valnai) and Evershine Nagar.
Malad provides access to a few popular beaches in Mumbai like Marve, Aksa and Erangal.
Mindspace, a posh office and residential complex, has triggered the continuing development of Malad into a hub for multinational companies. This is being catalysed by the fact that many businesses in Mumbai are moving offices into the suburbs. Some major companies in the Mindspace area are Convergys, Intelenet, 3G (3 Global Services), Sutherland Global Services,Epicenter Technology Pvt Ltd, NextServices, JP Morgan, EDS, E-serve, E-funds, ICICI One Source and OTIS.
Palm Court Complex - a residential complex is the most sought out premises in Malad. Build by K Raheja Constructions, the complex has 10 buildings and more than 1000 occupants. The facilities are the best in the area. It has a club house called The Palm Club which has state-of-the-art facilities.
Goregaon Sports Club, located between Mindspace and Palm Court Complex, is an ISO:9001 certified institution. It is gaining prominence as an elite club in the western suburbs of Mumbai.
