Manji (era)

Manji (万治) was a Japanese era name after Meireki and before Kanbun and spanned from 1658 to 1661. The reigning emperor was Go-Sai.

Because of disasters such as a great fire in Edo, on 7th month 23rd day, Meireki 4 (1658), the era was changed to Manji (万治)

From the Records of the Grand Historian, "衆民乃定、万国為治" ("When the common people know their place, then all under heaven is ruled")
