Mantracker is a television programme that airs on the Outdoor Life Network in Canada.
[edit] Mantracker
Mantracker is a "veteran cowboy and expert outdoorsman trained by the RCMP to track and retrieve missing persons in the bush." Terry Grant, a 12 year veteran of the Alberta Foothills Search and Rescue Team, is Mantracker. In each episode Mantracker is paired with a local guide who knows the territory of the chase. Mantracker uses clues such as footprints, moved or broken branches and probable path to track his prey. Mantracker has no information on who he is tracking (other than a flare that marks the starting point of the "prey", but takes every chase as a matter of personal and professional pride, considering his reputation at stake. Mantracker rides on horseback, which offers advantages of speed in open country, but sometimes impedes the chase if the prey takes to rough terrain.
[edit] Prey
During Season One, each episode saw two strangers form a team, referred to as the "Prey". The prey start out with a three kilometre head start, and head out toward a goal destination with a rudimentary map. The prey have thirty-six hours to try to outrun and outwit the Mantracker. The prey travel on foot through varied terrain, often cutting through dense brush, rocky ground, or even swimming across lakes to escape the Mantracker.
The "prey", or team of two individuals must arrive at their determined destination without being captured by Mantracker. The destination is often over 30 kilometers from the departure point.
If the "prey" are successful in arriving at their destination without being caught, they are victorious. The prize: Nothing but bragging rights.
Season two will be airing in the fall of 2007.
In the new season, the episodes have been expanded to hours. The new programs feature prey who have a pre-existing relationship; including sisters-in-law, Olympic teammates, and childhood friends.
