Marabounta

"Marabounta" is the thirty-sixth episode of the French animated television series Code Lyoko. It premiered in France on November 2, 2005 and in the United States on September 30, 2005.

After deciphering a part of Franz Hopper's diary, Jeremie gets an idea to make a monster that fights on the side of good. By combining techniques, he makes the Marabounta, a sphere that can replicate itself endlessly and devour any monster it can encase. Though it works quite well to begin with, everything goes wrong when it senses Aelita's link to Xana. After Odd attacks it to save her, it goes haywire and threatens to devour all of Lyoko.

The episode begins with Mrs. Hertz teaching the eighth grade science class about ant behaviour. She explains how their appearance of intelligence is actually thanks to the entire colony working together as a team. According to her, this effect is called "marabounta". Odd pokes fun at Sissi with this, claiming that a whole army of her might actually appear intelligent. Throughout the entire speech, Jeremie seems more interested in the ants than the others.
In the Cafeteria, Jeremie is discussing a part of Franz Hopper's diary he deciphered with the rest of the group. He says it revealed a program that acts similar to the ants. He tries to get the others to come to the Factory with him, but they all have prior commitments. Aelita has Italian homework, Odd's going to practice his skateboarding and Yumi is heading to the community pool. Ulrich decides to follow her. With everyone busy, Jeremie heads to the Factory alone.
At the municipal pool, William is preparing for a dive off the high board. Ulrich is watching and decides to do a dive of his own. William happens to notice and points it out to Yumi. Ulrich doesn't fare quite as well as William. He misses a step and lands face first in the pool. William drags him out. As is expected, everyone is worried. Sissi tries to get to him in order to do CPR. Yumi gets to him first, though. This would have been a stroke of luck for Ulrich, but Jim shows up and does the CPR before Yumi can. Yumi asks Ulrich if he's OK. Ulrich just shrugs it off and walks out.
At the Factory, Jeremie types in the program he got from Hopper's notes. Once he finishes the program, he runs it.
On Lyoko, a small, black sphere appears and starts to replicate. The extent of this replication is seen better when viewed from Jeremie's computer. Feeling pleased with his new program, he calls Odd and has him come to the Factory with Aelita.
At the school, Odd tries to convince Ulrich to come, but he's too caught up in his shame to want to.
In the Factory, Jeremie shows the program to Aelita and Odd. He explains how the little spheres are designed to attack XANA's monsters. Aelita is skeptical of the whole thing, not having the faith in Hopper that Jeremie seems to. Jeremie promises to shut down the Marabounta, as he names his new monster, should anything go wrong.
In the Forest Sector, Aelita and Odd are directed to where the Marabounta is. Once they arrive, they see XANA's monsters attacking the Marabounta, determined to end this new threat to their existence. The monsters put up a fight, but it is all for naught. The Marabounta regenerates with each hit and systematically devours each monster. Aelita is still freaked out by the Marabounta and asks to return home. As Jeremie tells them where to go, the Marabounta suddenly advances on Aelita. Odd's Lazer Arrows keep it from devouring her. This drives the Marabounta off the deep end and forces the pair to start fleeing.
Jeremie, furiously trying to figure out what's wrong, discovers that Aelita's virus is confusing the Marabounta. The monster was created to devour anything with a link to XANA. Aelita's virus serves as just such a link and she is now running for her life. Jeremie tries to shut the Marabounta down. Unfortunately, he fails. It seems that the Marabounta has grown beyond his ability to control it. Not only that, but it has also broadened its appetite to include anything and everything in its path. As the Marabounta begins to devour the entirety of Lyoko, Jeremie decides to call the others for backup.
At the pool, Sissi and William are discussing why they like their respective crushes. Sissi says she's liked Ulrich ever since elementary school. William says it was love at first sight with Yumi. Both are annoyed by Ulrich and Yumi's affection for each other. Yumi gets out of pool at this time and feels like taking off. She and William head out.
In Ulrich's room, he doesn't bother to answer his cell phone, still sulking about the earlier incident.
Jeremie calls Yumi shortly after she gets home. She knows where Ulrich is and goes to get him. Even she can't get him to budge.
On Lyoko, Aelita and Odd have managed to escape the Marabounta, but have lost their way because of it. Jeremie directs them back to a neutral Tower. The Marabounta is a step ahead of them, having already surrounded the Tower. It catches up to the pair fairly quickly. Odd manages to get out of its way, but Aelita is surrounded. To add to the trouble, a Krabe appears in front of Aelita. It doesn't act as one would expect, however. Instead, it leans down to let Aelita grab its leg. Once she does, it tosses her over to Odd. The Marabounta devours the Good Samaritan Krabe shortly after.
Jeremie realizes that XANA must want Aelita to remain alive in order to steal her memories at a later date. As if to confirm this, more monsters arrive to assist in the battle. Kankrelats surge forward into battle while Bloks and Krabes make a defensive perimeter around Aelita and Odd and begin to fire on the Marabounta with their weapons.
Yumi arrives to see these strange bedfellows work together to keep the Marabounta at bay. Jeremie sends her to Lyoko without explaining the situation. Because of this, she takes out a Blok once arriving. Odd brings her up to speed and they keep fighting.
Back at Ulrich's room, William shows up to talk to him. He warns Ulrich to tell Yumi. William adds that if Ulrich doesn't amake a move, he will pursue Yumi romantically. Ulrich stews over this for a moment and then heads for the Factory.
On Lyoko, the Marabounta is beginning to make headway. Several of the Kankrelats that had been helping the battle are devoured. The Marabounta pushes deeper into the monsters' line, taking out all opposing Bloks and Krabes. It manages to get a hold of Aelita, but Yumi manages to knock the Marabounta away before it can devour her as well. Yumi's move costs her though, as she lands in the middle of the Marabounta and is taken out of play. As she is brought back, Ulrich arrives to take her place.
Jeremie is still kicking himself over how to stop the Marabounta. A comment from Aelita about her virus gives him an idea. He uploads a virus into one of Odd's arrows. Odd needs to fire this arrow into the first sphere. Odd can't see a way to get to it, but XANA can. A Krabe walks up and offers Odd a ride on its back. It takes him to the first sphere. The Krabe becomes Marabounta feed just before Odd destroys the first sphere. Odd only has the one shot, but hits the mark. A huge explosion ensues. The skockwaves obliterate all traces of the Marabounta, removing the runaway threat forever. Left alone with the monsters, the gang gets on guard. They are surpirsed, however. The monsters get down on their mechanical legs and give Aelita and her protectors a bow of respect.
Back at the school, Jeremie apoligizes for the incident. He does point out that no one would come to assist him, though. As they walk, Sissi asks Ulrich how he's doing. He just tells her to cool it. Odd asks, too, but both Ulrich and Yumi insist it's nothing. Odd just smilies at the obvious lie and the episode ends.

[edit] Cinematic Notes
- During one of the pool scenes, Sissi’s hair changes from a tied back bun to her normal hairstyle.
- When Odd and Aelita were on Lyoko, as Odd is talking to Jeremie the purple and pink stripes on his face were gone. It continued on into the next scene between Odd and Aelita. But the scene after that, the stripes were back.
- When Jeremie calls Yumi about the Marabounta, a giant purple teddy bear can be seen in the corner of her room when the camera closes up on her. However, when the camera zooms out revealing more of the room. The aforementioned teddy bear is no longer present.
- The monsters seen defending Aelita from the Marabounta include Bloks, Kankrelats, and a Krabe, yet at the end, when the monsters are bowing, a Tarantula has appeared.
