Marals
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Maral deer or Noble deer refers to two distinct subspecies of deer.
Maral, by itself, often refers to the East European red deer (Cervus elaphus maral) whose range is throughout Asia Minor, Crimea, and the Caucasus Region located between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea.
The Altai Maral (or Altai Wapiti) is the largest ecotype (race) of Wapiti (Cervus canadensis canadensis) that inhabits the Eurasian Continent. In the Russian Altai, a mountainous region of western Siberia, hunting brought the Altai Maral to the verge of extinction. The species survives today in reserves and on deer farms where they are raised for venison and their seasonal velvet antlers.
