Marcus Buckingham holds a master’s degree in social and political science from Cambridge University and is a member of the Secretary of State's Advisory Committee on Leadership and Management. He lives with his wife and two children in Los Angeles. He is a researcher, author, and lecturer.
As a senior researcher with The Gallup Group, Buckingham helped to develop the Strengths-based approach to management that is now used by a variety of businesses, government departments, and other organizations.
Many organizations believe that anyone can learn to do any job equally well. They therefore try to force people to fit the person into a generic position. The Strength-based approach, however, is centered on the principle that each person has different natural strengths that can be developed into skills. Different people, therefore, may be better suited for different roles. Strengths Management suggests that the job be tailored to the person instead of the other way around.
Buckingham has authored and/or co-authored several books on the subject including "First, Break All The Rules", "Now, Discover Your Strengths", and "The One Thing You Need to Know". He also helped create the "StrengthsFinder" assessment tool that assists individuals in discovering their own strengths.
