Mardyke

The Mardyke is an area in Cork city, on the northern half of the long western part of the island formed by the two channels of the River Lee near the city centre. It consists of three adjacent green spaces: the cricket pitch and clubhouse of Cork County Cricket Club; Fitzgerald Park, including a museum; and the Athletic Grounds of University College Cork (UCC). Further up the Mardyke is located Presentation Brothers College, a boys secondary school.

The Athletic Grounds include the Mardyke Arena, an indoor sports centre and gymnasium opened by UCC in December 2001. There is a tartan track for athletics, where the Cork City Sports are held annually. The most notable performance came on 1984-07-03, when Yuriy Sedykh and Sergey Litvinov broke the world record in the hammer throw six times in one evening[1]. The Mardyke has the home pitch of the college rugby union club, which is also used by UCC Soccer Club, and UCC's Gaelic Games clubs. It was formerly the chief venue for soccer in Cork, and a crowd of 18,000 watched a friendly match in 1939 between the FAI national soccer team and Hungary, the first international played outside Dublin[2]. All the playing fields are floodlit.
