Mark Howett

Mark Hedley Howett (born June 25, 1963) is an Australian director, designer and lighting designer of theatre, film and opera.

In 1981 he observed the lighting course at the Yale School of Drama New York. The Opera Australia production of The Rake's Progress was his first major design with director Jim Sharman. In doing so he became one of the youngest designers for Opera Australia at the Sydney Opera House. He has since worked with many Australian and International theatre, film, dance and opera companies. Many of the productions he designed, have been recognised critically and received major awards. Numerous productions have toured extensively in Australia and overseas. Highlights include the lighting for Australian Ballet and Bangarra Dance Theatre production of “Rites”, which was simulcast nationally on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and toured to New York City Centre´s in 1999. “Cloudstreet”,directed by Neil Armfield, won Howett the Robert Helpmann Award for lighting design. in 2002, toured to New York at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Royal National Theatre, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Washington, Zurich and nationally in Australia.
