Marlon Tarron McCree (born March 17, 1977 in Orlando, Florida) is an American football defensive back currently playing for the San Diego Chargers of the NFL. McCree attended college at the University of Kentucky, and has played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans and the Carolina Panthers. His nickname is "Mad Dog McCree".
McCree played four years at the University of Kentucky and was drafted in the 7th round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. McCree played a lot during his first two seasons, getting into all but three games, and making six interceptions in 2002. McCree was waived by the Jaguars in 2003 and was picked up by the Houston Texans. On December 21, 2003 he scored his first career touchdown, a 95 yard interception return off of the Tennessee Titans' Steve McNair.
McCree was claimed off waivers by the Carolina Panthers prior to the 2005 NFL season, where he served as the starting free safety. McCree recorded three interceptions in the regular season, and snatched two passes in a 23-0 rout of the New York Giants in the first round of the playoffs.
On March 11, 2006, the San Diego Chargers signed McCree to a five year deal off the free agent market.
On November 12, 2006 in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals, he hit Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh before the ball got there. T.J. was hurt on the play, and McCree apologized. After the game T.J. Houshmandzadeh said that McCree did nothing wrong during the play. Marlon McCree was not fined or suspended by the NFL.
During a January 14, 2007, playoff game against the New England Patriots, McCree had a critical fourth quarter interception with the Chargers leading, 21-13. However, while tackling McCree following the interception, Patriots wide receiver Troy Brown managed to strip the ball away from him. The Patriots would recover with a fresh set of downs, and they took advantage of that by scoring a touchdown and a two-point conversion to tie the game at 21. The Patriots eventually won, 24-21, and McCree's fumble could thus be viewed as a game-changing play. McCree's interception came on 4th down, so he and the Chargers would have been better had he simply knocked the ball to the ground. Even had he not fumbled the ball, the Chargers would have gotten worse field position than had he simply knocked the ball down. When asked about the fumble his response was "I was trying to make a play".
