Marryatville, South Australia

Marryatville is a small suburb to the east of Adelaide's central business district. Along with neighbouring Heathpool, it is part of the City of Norwood Payneham St Peters whereas all the suburbs around it save Kensington are not.
In Marryatville there are no large major Shopping Complexes but there is a Woolworths shop. In the "arcade" of the 'Marryatville Shops' there is a newsagents, liquor store, bakery (Bakers Delight), yogurt shop, fruit and vegetable grocer, cafe and a take-away store (Wok In A Box).
The ‘Marryatville Shops’ are a new development of only the past two years. Before Woolworths and the new shopping complex was built, "BILO" had a supermarket in its location. This was demolished and rebuilt due to the lack of parking spaces, older style design and lack of floor space for other shops. The other shops that were in the vicinity were also empty and becoming decrepit.
Marryatville High School, notable for its music program, is located within the suburb. The school was formerly Norwood Boys Technical School until it was renamed and opened to both sexes in 1976.
Marryatville was settled in the 19th century by the Scarfe family, whose name later became associated with South Australian retailer Harris Scarfe. Eden Park, the grand two-storey Victorian house the family built, is now used as the high school's Year 12 campus; and the timber stables, a short distance away, have been converted into a music centre.
In 2005 Marryatville's Performing Arts Centre, The Forge, was opened. It serves as a performance area for year 11 and 12 Drama Productions and is also used by outside theatre groups.
First Creek runs through the suburb, originating from the hills. Floods in November 2005 overflowed First Creek’s banks heavily. Many houses and Marryatville High School became flooded with debris and soil from upstream. There were no fatalities from the flood but it did cause considerable damage to some houses and Marryatville High Schools grounds.
