A lectureship was instituted in 1895. The Marshall Chair of Modern Romance Languages with special reference to the language and literature of France was founded in 1917. It was endowed by Robert Marshall, James Clason-Harvie and others. Its title was changed to the Marshall Chair of French Language and Literature in 1966.
