Martin Connor

Martin Connor is a New York State Senator from Brooklyn. He was first elected to the State Senate in 1978. He is a Democrat.
In 1999, as Minority Leader of the State Senate, he supported a vote to abolish New York City's Commuter Tax, in an effort to win an open Senate seat in Rockland County, despite the opposition of Mayor Rudy Giuliani and other city officials. He served for eight years as Minority Leader of the Senate. He was defeated for the minority leader's post in 2002 by Sen. David Paterson, now the lieutenant governor.
He was challenged in 2006 in the closest primary he has been in for several years, against Ken Diamondstone, a developer of affordable housing, which he won. He currently serves as Ranking Minority Member of the Senate Banks Committee and is a former Ranking Minority Member of the Senate Local Government Committee. On January 19, 2007 he filed an application to be considered by the State Legislature for election as New York State Comptroller.
