Martin John Newell

Martin John Newell became a Melbourne City Councillor in 1978,upon the retirement of Lord Mayor Ronald Walker,O.B.E. In 1980,Newell became an Independent Candidate in the Wills Electorate, (won by Bob Hawke, later Prime Minister of Australia). Independent minded Newell supported many minor political parties,becaming Federal Secretary for the Consevative Alliance Party and was an early supporter of the Family First Party in South Australia. In 1989, Newell served on the Board of Management of the Printing and Kindred Union of Australia. He became a Mayoral Candidate in the September 2006 election for the Mayor of Mount Gambier,South Australia's second largest City.Newell fought to retain the Mount Gambier Rail land in public hands. He managed to obtain a commitment from the then present Mayor,Steve Perryman that a public referendum would be put to the Mount Gambier residents before any of the land is sold off.
