Mary Kawena Pukui

Mary Kawena Pukui ( 1895-1986) was an expert on the Hawaiian language and Hawaiian culture. She was born in Kaʻū, Big Island, to a traditional Hawaiian-speaking family. She was educated in the Hawaiian Mission Academy, taught Hawaiiana at Punahou School and worked in the Bishop Museum in 1938-1961.
Mary Kawena Pukui is the co-author of Hawaiian Dictionary (1971, revised 1986), Place Names of Hawaii (1974), and The Echo of Our Song (1974), a translation of old chants and songs. She wrote books and articles on Hawaiian culture and traditions. She was a chanter and hula expert, and wrote lyrics and/or music to more than 150 Hawaiian songs.
