[edit] Route description
[edit] Burkittsville Road
Beginning at the Potomac River bridge in Brunswick, MD 17 crosses over a railroad line and the C&O Canal National Historical Park and descends into the town, known locally as Petersville Road and serving as the main north-south route. After exiting the town it turns northwest at a four-way intersection, meeting the southern terminus of MD 79 and the northern terminus of MD 464. Now known as Burkittsville Road it continues on a northwestern path, meeting MD 180 at a traffic circle just south of an interchange with US 340.
Continuing north of US 340, the highway parallels the eastern edge of Gathland State Park and enters the town of Burkittsville before turning northeast. It intersects the northern terminus of MD 383 south of Middletown before turning north and entering the town proper, meeting Alt US 40 in the downtown area.
[edit] Myersville Road
Running straight out of Middletown the route is known as Myersville Road. Tracing a meandering path south of Interstate 70 it turns west, then northwest, eventually meeting the Interstate at a diamond interchange just south of Myersville at mile marker 18 (mile 42 on I-70). Now known as Main St. the route serves as part of the main north-south route through the town, turning east at an in-town intersection to intersect US 40 northeast of the town.
[edit] Wolfsville Road
Known as Wolfsville Road, MD 17 runs northeast along the western edge of the Catoctin Mountains, serving the villages of Ellerton, [[Middlepoint, Maryland|Middlepoint] and Wolfsville. Running north out of the village, MD 17 comes to an abrupt halt at the Washington County line near South Mountain, while Wolfsville Road itself continues north to junction MD 64 and MD 77 in Smithsburg.

[edit] History
Originally this route was signed MD 33 and the current MD 33 was signed as MD 17. The numbers were swapped in the late 1930s. Later, Route 17 was broken in two when the maintenance of a section of the route was assumed by the county. Part of Route 17 north of U.S. 40 was designated Maryland Route 153. Eventually this situation was reversed, and the Route 17 designation was restored to the entire route.
