Matagami, Quebec

Matagami is a small town in Quebec, Canada, part of the Baie-James Municipality. It is located north of Amos, on Matagami Lake, and marks the start of the Route de la Baie James (James Bay Road). Matagami was founded in 1963 with the development of mining in the area. Since then, logging has also become a major contributor to the local economy. Matagami has a small tourism industry and boasts three motel-hotels due to its location at the start of the James Bay Road and the popularity of fishing in northern Quebec. Hotel Bell, Motel Matagami and the Caribou include full service bars. Its population is just under 2000 persons. Magatami is the birthplace of Canadian swimmer Marianne Limpert, who won the silver medal in the 200m Individual Medley at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
