Mauricio Pellegrino

Mauricio Andrés Pellegrino (born October 5, 1971 in Leones, Argentina) is a former Argentine footballer. He mostly played for Vélez Sarsfield. Pellegrino was an integral part in the golden era of the Buenos Aires based club during the 90's.

A commanding stalwart that helped Valencia to the 2003/2004 Spanish First Division title and UEFA Cup, Pellegrino is an experienced defender who is highly respected, despite missing the decisive penalty in the 2001 Champion's League final during the penalty shootout against Bayern Munich. However, he was frozen out by then-Valencia manager Claudio Ranieri, and consequently joined his former boss (and Ranieri's predecessor) Rafael Benítez at Liverpool F.C. on a free transfer, signing a six-month contract in January 2005. At the end of this contract, he was allowed to join Alavés.
