Mavelikara lies at the south of Alappuzha district; on the banks of the river Achankovil. It is located at

Some of the industries in and around Mavelikara are 1) Allind steel near Mannar 2) Travancore Oxygen near Kunnam 3) Sangrose Laboratories, a local company in Mavelikara, specialises in the manufacture of soft gelatin capsules. It is also one of the only companies in the world to manufacture clofazimine.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Mavelikara had a population of 28,440. Males constitute 47% of the population and females 53%. Mavelikkara has an average literacy rate of 86%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 87%, and female literacy is 85%. In Mavelikkara, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Mr. M.Murali (INC) represents the Mavelikara Assembly constituency (from 2006).

It is a place in Kerala where one can find The Statue of Buddha in Seated Position, from the 9th Century C.E.[1] The seated Buddha is in front of famous Sri Krishna Swami temple. Mavelikara is known as the seat of education due to the presence of many standard educational institutions. Bishop Moore College,Mavelikara-690110, is the major educational institution for higher studies in Mavelikara.

Chettikulangara Located about 5 Km south-west of Mavelikkara , Chettikulangara is famous for the well known Bhagavathy temple. The important festival in this temple is the Kumbha Bharani festival conducted during February-March. The important festivity associated with this utsavam is "kettu-Kazhcha' which resembles the Chinese festival celebrated on the birthday of Budha. Kuthiyottam is also another important festivity.
Bharanikavu & Pallickal Located on the Mavelikkara -Kurathikadu-Kayamkulam road, Bharanikavu is famous for its Devi Temple and its swarna jeevitha and houses one of the four Buddha Statues (Puthrachan)in Alappuzha District.The famous Churches of Kattanam add to the glory of this calm and peaceful panchayat.Government School-Bharanikkavu,Pope Pius XI High School,CMS High School are some of the major educational institutions. Kandiyoor Kandiyoor is place of historical importance. It was there that the Travancore Raja gained the decisive victory over Kayamkulam Raja. There is famous Mahadeva temple which contains the sub-shrines considered to have been made especially sacred by the presence of all Gods of Hindu Pantheon. There are ancient inscriptions of archaeological importance and it is noted for stone sculptures.
St.Mary's Cathedral Church Puthiyakavu Mavelikara This church is famous for the resolution (Padiyola), unanimously accepted at the Mavelikara Synod held in 1836 at the Mavelikara Puthiyakavu St.Mary's church which was drawn up in the year of our Lord 1836 corresponding 5th Makarom 1011 at the church dedicated to the Virgin Mother of Lord at Mavelikara, between Mar Dionyosious Metropolitan of the Jacobite Syrian Church of Malankarai subject to the supremacy of Mar Ignatius Patriarch, the Father of Fathers, and the Chief of Chiefs ruling the throne of St. Peter of Antioch, the mother of all Churches and his successor Mar Kurilos, and the vicars, priests and parishioners of Ankamali and other churches under the charge of the said Metropolitan.

Named after the late Rt. Rev. Edward Alfred Livingstone Moore, the fourth Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Travancore-Cochin is owned by the Madhya Kerala Diocese of the Church of South India. Established in 1964, the college was upgraded in 1967. At present the college has nine Degree courses and two PG courses, one in Physics and the other in Chemistry. The college has 98 staff on the faculty. There are 70 supporting staff to take care of a total strength of 2,450 students. Many of the BMC students have won awards in sports and games. In the Inter-Collegiate Youth Festivals the college has produced budding artists in classical dance, music and dramatic performance. The college runs an efficiently managed Women's Hostel. A well maintained green house, well equipped laboratories and a library with a rich collection of books are some of the things that the college can justifiably be proud of. Named after the late Rt. Rev. Edward Alfred Livingstone Moore, the fourth Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Travancore-Cochin is owned by the Madhya Kerala Diocese of the Church of South India. Established in 1975. The school has 75 staff on the faculty. There are 40 supporting staff to take care of a total strength of 2600students. Many of the BMV students have won awards in sports and games. In the quizzing feild this school monopolizes most of competitions.

The area might have been ruled by a ruling family in the past, though evidence for which is lacking.Probably the word has originated from Odal (reed) nadukara(land). There had been lot or reed in the area. But now there is hardly any reed forest remains here. [1]
