Maximilian Jenius (マクシミリアン・ジーナス Makushimirian Jīnasu?) is a fictional character in the science fiction television series Macross, voiced by Sho Hayami. In the new English adaptation by ADV Films, he is voiced by Chris Patton. He is known as Max Sterling in the Robotech English adaptation, where he is voiced by Cam Clarke.

[edit] Macross
Max Jenius is a young fighter pilot in Hikaru Ichijyo's (Rick Hunter in Robotech) Vermillion Team along with Hayao Kakizaki (Ben Dixon in Robotech). Jenius shows in his first sortie that he is a preternaturally talented ace pilot who is near invincible in combat, despite his need to wear corrective lenses on duty. He is quickly recognized as the top pilot of the force.
Jenius' skill at piloting mecha becomes even more celebrated with feats that no other pilot would have thought of, much less attempted. Particularly during the time when he infiltrates a Zentradi ship in his mecha and controls it so deftly that he even manages to disguise it in the clothes of a Zentradi to pass for a native is a stand out incident.
Jenius is not above an occasional egotistical musing when he is off duty, but he also respects his comrades and they return the favor. He is also an incurable romantic in his youth which shows when he meets his future wife.
That occurred when the top Zentradi ace pilot, Milia Fallyna, (Miriya Parino in Robotech) hears about a formidable pilot aboard the humans' SDF-1 Macross space fortress and seeks to challenge him personally in battle. Max manages to defeat Milia not once, but three times. The first in their respective mechas, the second in simulated combat (a videogame) and finally in a knife fight to the death. It is this final fight where the two rivals fall in love. Immediately after the knife-fight in the park Max proposes to Milia who accepts. Afterward, Milia is allowed to join the mainline fighting forces of the SDF-1 Macross and becomes Max's wingmate on duty, which creates a formidable combination in battle.
After the Zentradi Fleet that nearly destroys the earth is vanquished, Max and Milia have a daughter (the first of seven) named Komilia Maria Fallyna Jenius. (renamed Dana Sterling in the Robotech adaptation.)

In Macross 7, Max, who sports a pony tail, becomes the captain of the Battle Seven and commander of the Macross Seven Fleet, though he is separated from Milia. The couple have seven natural daughters and one adopted daughter. It is also implied that he still has feelings for his estranged wife.
As captain of Battle Seven, Max takes command of the Macross Seven Fleet with advice from a giant Exsedol Folmo. Max is also responsible for the establishment of the Sound Force to combat the Protodeviln threat. Although Max is pretty much separated from his family because of his assignment at Battle Seven's bridge, he would often check up on his daughter, Mylene Flare Jenius, whom, he duly tries to protect. Max even forbade Mylene to join the Sound Force. However, due to the effectiveness and adequacy of Mylene, he decided to give in, resistantly however.
In Macross 7, Max also has shown that his piloting skills are top notched and unrivaled. As usual, the Valkyrie he pilots is blue in color. Despite being about 50 years old, Max looks little older than he did in the original series. Character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto half-jokingly said that is the case "because he's a genius. Growing old is a state of mind for average men."

As previously stated Max and Milia have eight daughters (seven biological, one adopted). The names of the 8 children are:

[edit] Macross: Do You Remember Love
In Macross: Do You Remember Love movie, Max and Milia met in a completely different way. After the Macross returns to Earth , the Meltrandi, under the command of Lap Lamiz launched their campaign against the Macross. The Meltrandi fleet sends in their highly trained Queadluun-Rau power armors, led by their ace pilot, Milia Fallyna. In their ensuing battle with the Macross and subsequent death of Hayao Kakizaki, Max and Milia fight against each other. In the last phase of the battle, Max and Milia enter the Lap Lamiz's ship and there, Max manages to down his opponent. Upon breaching the armor, Max is enamored by Milia (as she is with him) and expresses his awe of the Meltran pilot.
In the final battle between Boddole Zer and the Macross fleet, a giant Max is seen with Milia battling together in their respective specialized blue and red Queadluun-Raus.

In Robotech after the end of the Macross Saga, Max and Miriya join their friends Rick and Lisa Hunter aboard the SDF-3 Pioneer Expedition in traveling to the stars to do battle with the Robotech Masters. Max and Miriya leave behind their young daughter, Dana Sterling, in the care of a family friend, Rolf Emerson, who is also godfather to Bowie Grant. Dana was to be the leading character of the Robotech Southern Cross series (in footage from a separate anime). At an unknown point in time, Max and Miriya have a second daughter, Maia Sterling, who is leader of Skull Squadron during the Battle of Reflex Point. The SDF-3 vanishes during the return jump to Earth preparatory to the Battle of Reflex Point. Max and Mirya had just arrived aboard the SDF-3 when the ship was testing the Neutron S Missiles. After the Icarus was forced to withdraw leaving the SDF-3 their fate is unknown.
In the secondary continuity of the Del Rey novels by Jack McKinney, the second daughter of Max and Miriya is named Aurora Sterling, and she is gifted with psychic powers.
It should be noted that Max Sterling is widely considered to be the most powerful and dangerous Robotech warrior in the entire Robotech universe.
