Maximilian von Herff

Maximilian von Herff (b. April 17, 1893 in Hannover; † September 6, 1945 in Windmere) was a German General of the Schutzstaffel.
The nobleman von Herff served as an officer at the Reichswehr in the First World War, attaining the rank of colonel and winning the Iron Cross First and Second Class. During the Second World War von Herff served in North Africa as commander of the Kampfgruppe "von Herff". For his service in Africa he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross in June 1941.
On April 1, 1942, he joined the NSDAP (member no. 8 858 661) and the SS (member no. 405 894). On April 20, 1944, von Herff war promoted to SS-Obergruppenführer and General of Waffen-SS. From October 1, 1942 to May 8, 1945, he was in charge of the SS-Personalhauptamt. He died 1945 as a Prisoner of War at Windermere camp.
