McBain is a 1991 action film written and directed by James Glickenhaus. It is about an ex-soldier who reunites his old army buddies in order to get revenge on a Colombian dictator who killed his old friend, a freedom fighter. McBain starred Christopher Walken, Maria Conchita Alonso and Michael Ironside.
While the film was not very successful, taking in less than $USD500,000 at the U.S. box office, it managed to earn a devoted cult following. However, the film did make a resounding impact on one of the most popular television programs of recent times: The Simpsons.
[edit] The Simpsons connection
"McBain" was originally the name of a supporting character on The Simpsons, an Arnold Schwarzenegger analogue who starred in a fictional series of action films of the same name. His appearance on The Simpsons predates the release of this film, and apart from the name, the film has little relation to the character.
However, for some time after the release of the real McBain film, the movie's producers refused to give Twentieth Century Fox and Matt Groening's production team clearance to use the "McBain" name. In order to continue using the character, a new name: Rainier Wolfcastle, was created and became the character's "real name", with the unusable "McBain" becoming his alter-ego.
Later, the use of "McBain" as both Wolfcastle's alter-ego and his continuing series of films returned to the show as the naming issues blew over. The real McBain film featured a plot typical of Rambo-style action films that were popular at the time, the same style and plot The Simpsons' McBain regularly parodies on the show.
