Meiktila

Meiktila is a town in Mandalay Division, Myanmar; its population was 252,305 in 1901, and it is located at 20°53'N, 95°53' E.
It is situated on the banks of Lake Meiktila, an ancient irrigation and drinking water reservoir, and at the junction of the Bagan-Taunggyi, Yangon-Mandalay and Meiktila-Myingyan highways.
Lake Meiktila is artificial, and according to Burmese legend was begun 2500 years ago by the grandfather of Gautama Buddha. It is 7 miles long, averages half a mile across, and covers an area of 3.5 sq. mile. Mone-Dai dam supplies water to the lake.
Meiktila also has a military airfield and it has been a strategic military base since colonial time because of its location at the junction of main highways.
The town is home to the Meikhtila Education College, Meikhtila Institute of Economics and Meikhtila University.
