Melchior Russ
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Melchior Russ was a knight and a citizen of Lucerne. He wrote the city's annals from 1482 to 1488. These notes contain an early reference to the legend of William Tell (the earliest one dating to another decade before Russ, in a song dated to 1470). In Russ' version, Tell is shot as he tries to escape from the boat, omitting the story of the killing of Gessler.
Russ was the owner of Sins and Rüssegg, two possessions near Lucerne, including a castle, that were sold to him by the heirs of Hans Iberg in 1476. In 1495 (after Melchior's death?) they were passed to Albin von Silenen and in 1502 to the city of Lucerne.
