Metropolitan Area of Barcelona

The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona is integrated by three territorial organisms of management. As a whole they offer services to 36 municipalities with a population of 3.161.081 (INE, 2006) in an area of 633 km ².
It is central nucleus of the Urban Region of Barcelona, which relies on a population of 5.327.872 and covers an area of 4.268 km².

[edit] Internal functioning
It is constituted by:
- Mancomunitat de Municipis (Union of Municipalities): 31 municipalities integrate it. It manages the common areas that they affect to: public spaces, infrastructures, equipments, urbanism and housing. It relies on 3.041.703 in an area of 495 km ². Seen the services that it offers it might be considered to be the genuine Barcelona metropolitan area.
- Entitat del Transport (Entity of the Transport): 18 municipalities integrate it. It gives service to a population of 2.804.992 in an area of 332 km ². They are those who form the strict urban constant one with the capital. Created to manage of joint form the services of travelers' public transport in his territorial area.
- Entitat del Medi Ambient (Entity of the Environment): 33 municipalities integrate it. It gives service to a population of 3.133.288 in an area of 583 km ². Entrusted to manage the hydraulic services and the treatment of residues.

The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona is on the central Catalan Coast and around the capital. They can differentiate two zones:
- The bordering zone: it forms the continuous urban one with the city: it is delimited by the Mediterranean Sea and the Serra de Collserola. Here they find some cities, as Badalona, Hospitalet de Llobregat, Santa Coloma de Gramanet or Cornellà de Llobregat. Here the border among municipalities they are streets, avenues or the riverbeds of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs.
- The metropolitan adjacent zone: here there are different nuclei of population in those who predominate over residential neighborhoods of one-family houses, industries, forests... In this zone are cities as: Sant Vicenç dels Horts, Sant Cugat del Vallès and Cerdanyola del Vallès.
