Mhair Saro Dekmezian (born 1985) was a candidate for District 134 of the Texas House of Representatives in the 2006 general election.
Dekmezian ran as the Libertarian candidate in Texas House district 134 against Martha Wong and Ellen Cohen. Dekmezian supported libertarian view points and believed that both Wong and Cohen were not good candidates for his particular district as they did not accurately represent the citizens of this district.[1] Unlike many third party candidates, Dekmezian had enough popular support to take part in the debates with the Democratic and Republican candidates. [2] This maneuvering into the political mainstream gained him the attention of local media, who often overlook alternative candidates.[3] [4] In an Oct. 24, 2006 report by News 2 Houston local television news, Dekmezian was referred to as a "major candidate" and was interviewed during a "coffee with the candidates" segment, along with Ellen Cohen. Incumbant Martha Wong did not attend.[5] Dekmezian received 1,018 votes, or 2.20% of the total.[6] This was a significant improvement over previous Libertarian candidates. For example, in 2002, Nathaniel LaFleur recieved only 1 percent of the votes in the 2002 election. [7]
Dekmezian was born 25 October 1985 in Harris County, Texas[8]. He attended St. John's School in Houston, and he is currently a junior at Rice University. [9]
