Mia Couto

Mia Couto, pron. IPA: ['mi.ɐ 'ko.tʊ], (born 5 July 1955, Beira, Mozambique), born António Emílio Leite Couto to Portuguese parents, is considered Mozambique's foremost novelist. He writes in the Portuguese language. His books have been published in over 22 countries.

His first novel, "Terra Sonâmbula (Sleepwalking Land)", was called "one of the best 12 African books of the 20th century" by an international jury in the Zimbabwe International Book Fair [1]. His writing is heavily influenced by the magical realism common in Latin American postcolonial literature, and his use of the Portuguese language is inventive, and is reminiscent of Guimarães Rosa.
