[edit] Early life
Michael Kavanagh was born in Freshford, County Kilkenny in 1979. He was educated locally and later attended St. Kieran's College in Kilkenny, a famous hurling nursery. Here his hurling skills were nurtured and developed, and he won an All-Ireland Colleges medal with the school. Kavanagh later studied at Waterford Institute of Technology. Here he played on the college's senior hurling team, winning two Fitzgibbon Cup medals in the process. Kavanagh currently works as a financil advisor with Royal Liver.
[edit] Playing career
[edit] Club
Kavanagh plays his club hurling with St. Lachtain's Gaelic Athletic Association club.
[edit] Inter-county
Since beginning his playing career at inter-county level, Kavanagh has had much success. At minor level he won two Leinster titles, however, he failed to capture an All-Ireland title at this level. By 1999 he was playing on both the senior and under-21 Kilkenny teams. That year he added an All-Ireland medal to the two Leinster under-21 titles he had already won.
In 1998 Kavanagh made his debut on the Kilkenny senior hurling team. He immediately won his first Leinster medal, however, his side were defeated by Offaly in the All-Ireland final. In 1999 Kavanagh won his another Leinster title, however, a young, unfancied Cork side defeated Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final once again. In 2000 Kavanagh captured his third Leinster title which allowed Kilkenny to advance to a third consecutive All-Ireland final. This time Kavanagh ended up on the victorious side and claimed his first All-Ireland medal with a huge win over Offaly.
In 2001 Kavanagh claimed his fourth Leinster medal, however, there was no All-Ireland title to celebrate. In 2002 Kilkenny were back on form and Kavanagh captured his first National Hurling League title. He subsequently claimed yet another Leinster title before later winning his second All-Ireland medal with a victory over Clare. He was subsequently honoured with an All-Star award. In 2003 Kilkenny completed the so-called double-double by winning a second consecutive National League and All-Ireland title. The All-Ireland win over Cork gave Kavanagh his second All-Star. In 2004 Kilkenny were aiming for the three-in-a-row of All-Ireland victories, however, the side had a less than successful year. They lost their Leinster crown to Wexford but reached the All-Ireland final via the qualifiers system. On the day they lost to an up-and-coming Cork.
In 2005 Shefflin won his third National League title, his seventh Leinster medal and the scene looked set for a third consecutive show-down between Cork and Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final. Galway, however, put an end to Kilkenny's hopes in a thrilling semi-final at Croke Park. In 2006 Kavanagh captured his fourth National League title in a close victory over Limerick. He later won his seventh Leinster title which allowed "the Cats" to progress and meet Cork in the All-Ireland final. On the day Kilkenny were too strong for Cork and Kavanagh colleceted his fourth All-Ireland medal.
Kavanagh has also won three Railway Cup medals with Leinster.
