Michael N. Gianaris

Michael N. Gianaris is a New York Assemblyman representing District 36, which is comprised of Astoria, Long Island City, Queensbridge and Ravenswood, among other neighborhoods located in the New York City borough of Queens.
First elected to the Assembly in 1988, Gianaris had previously served as Associate Counsel to the New York State Assembly. Specifically, Counsel to the Committee on Consumer Affairs and Protection, Governmental Operations, Veterans Affairs, and Agriculture and Markets.
He previously served as an aide to former Queens Congressman Thomas Manton, as well as former Governor Mario Cuomo's Queens County Regional Representative. He has also served as a member of Queens Community Planning Board 1 and Legal Counsel to the United Community Civic Association.
In 2005, he launched a bid to beome the next Attorney General of New York State, but dropped out of the race shortly afterward, in part-some speculate-because of the announcement of Andrew Cuomo's candidacy for the same office.
Gianaris holds a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Fordham University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
