Micheldever
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Micheldever is a village in Hampshire, England, situated north of Winchester off the A33 road.
Micheldever (pronounced "Mitchel-dev-ver" lies upon a stream named the River Dever (pronounced, confusingly, "Dever"). The stream, and village, formerly part of Stratton Park, lie on a Hampshire grass downland, underlain with chalk and flint. Parts of the river now disappear in Summer through lack of replenishment, evaporation and, more specifically, the porous nature of the bedrock.
Micheldever Parish is the most northerly one in the borough of The City of Winchester. It includes Micheldever, Micheldever Station (a separate village), East Stratton, West Stratton and Weston Colley amongst other places.
The village has a church (Church of England), a telephone exchange (01 962 774 XXX numbers), a shop and a pub ("The Half Moon And Spread Eagle"). In recent years the butcher's shop has closed and, before that, the bakery also closed. Also in the village is a thriving primary school - which is currently (August 2006-March 2007 and continuing) being expanded by extensive building work.
The village is served by Micheldever station – located some distance away at grid reference SU518428 – on the main railway line between London and Southampton. Micheldever Station is the only one between Basingstoke and Winchester; its remote existence explained by its original name of Andover Road; the town of Andover not receiving its own station until much later. The 'village' of Micheldever Station has become a desirable commuter area in recent years, because of the direct London connection of this otherwise remote location.
