Michael Broggie Award-Winning Author, Historian and Lecturer
Michael Broggie is nationally recognized as an authority on the personal life, career and historical legacy of Walt Disney. His book Walt Disney’s Railroad Story, published by Donning Company Publishers, is widely considered to be the definitive story of how Disney and his Imagineers created Disneyland. This work received the coveted Benjamin Franklin Gold Medal from the Publishers Association as Best Biography of the Year (1998). His father, Disney Legend Roger E. Broggie, was the first Imagineer and is one of eight in the Broggie family to work for Disney.
Michael’s book Walt Disney’s Happy Place, also published by Donning, celebrates Walt’s centennial by communicating his life story to intergenerational readers with dual text for beginning readers and adults. His third book is the comprehensive history of Disney merchandising. His biographical profile of Warren Buffett’s business partner, financial genius Charles Munger, is contained in the 470-page Poor Charlie’s Almanack, edited and published by Peter D. Kaufman. June 2006 was the release of Air Force One—The Final Mission that Michael authored with photographers Joel and Michael Cohen for the Reagan Presidential Library. Michael is currently researching the history of Walt Disney Studios with Gary Oakland for an upcoming book.
Besides writing books and national magazine articles, Michael has over 30 years experience developing partnerships between businesses and cause-related organizations. He is a board member of Anchor Education Foundation, a nonprofit, public benefit corporation fostering new ideas in education. He is a board member of the Museum of the San Fernando Valley, Adopt-A-Future Foundation and the Carolwood Foundation. He held managing positions at Lake Arrowhead Resort Corporation and Marriott Corporation. As Executive Vice President of Marketing & Financial Management, he managed major clients including General Motors, Saturn Corporation, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Los Angeles Olympics. He is a partner of Broggie & Campbell Productions, which develops and produces consumer products and a partner of Askew Eatertainment, a themed restaurant development company.
His many speaking assignments have included schools, museums, libraries, corporations and conventions. He has presented lectures at The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management, World Automobile Congress, International Design Conference at Aspen and Disney University in Orlando. Michael is a national speaker for "World's Greatest Hobby," a support program for the advancement of model railroading, which is entering its third year of touring throughout the United States. He and his wife Sharon are the co-founders of the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society and the Carolwood Foundation, which operates Walt Disney’s Carolwood Museum at Griffith Park, Los Angeles, on behalf of the Walt Disney Family Foundation.
A native of Los Angeles, Michael earned his MBA and a Doctorate in Marketing (summa cum laude) at California Pacific University; San Diego; a BA in Communications from California State University, Northridge; and, an AA in Journalism from Los Angeles Valley College. He attended law school at Lincoln University in San Francisco. A U. S. Air Force veteran, he served as a military pharmacist.
