Mike (Twin Peaks)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mike is a fictional character in the TV series Twin Peaks.
[edit] Character overview
He is a spirit who may have originated as an alternate personality of a man named Phillip Gerard, a travelling shoe salesman. Whether Gerard or "Mike" is the primary personality is unclear. Gerard remains unaware of "Mike" and his activities, as "Mike" has spent years trying to find and stop the evil Spirit BOB, who was once his partner in serial murder.
[edit] Character history
After committing several rape/murders with Bob, Mike had an religious epiphany and repented, cutting off his own arm to rid himself of a "Fire Walk With Me" tattoo, which symbolised being touched by an "evil one". He killed Bob, who would not repent. Bob's spirit remained, and possessed a young boy named Leland Palmer. Mike spent years searching for BOB, aware that he was still killing, but not who his host was.
After FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper comes to Twin Peaks to investigate the murder of Leland's daughter, Laura, Mike appears to Cooper in a dream. He explains to Cooper his and BOB's history, but in a way that is not immediately clear. He shows Cooper a vision of Bob as he appeared in life. Later, Cooper, Deputy Hawk, and Sherriff Truman locate Mike, but he is in his Philip Gerard personality, and unable to give them any information. Later, in the show's second season, Mike is key to solving Laura Palmer's murder.
In the Twin Peaks prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Mike harasses Leland Palmer in a road rage incident, where he accuses Leland of "stealing the corn". It is known that the emotions of terror and pleasure BOB collects is called "Garmonbozia", and is consumed by BOB, Mike, and possibly other spirits as food in the form of corn. On the night of Laura Palmer's murder, Mike confronts Bob in the White Lodge. This confrontation is mediated by the Man from another place. Mike demands that BOB return his stolen Garmonbozia. BOB responds by pulling it out of Leland, in the form of a murder victim's blood on his clothes and casting it to the floor.
Because of the other-dimensional nature of the white and black lodges, this confrontation may not have happened in linear time on the night of Laura's murder, but sometime after.
