Since 1794, the Millheim Hotel has been the main attraction of Millheim, in Centre County Pennsylvania. The hotel gives lodging to a variety of people, from families to fishermen, hunters, bicycle riders, and sports enthusiasts. In this old fashioned town of 749 people, you can still see horse and buggies trotting down Route 45.

In 1794, Michael and Anna Mary Shaffer purchased the property in Millheim from Philip Gunkle, where they served overnight lodgers food and drinks. The hotel was named the Black Hotel, until Andrew Kreamer bought it in 1842. Sometime in the 1830’s or 1840’s, the building burned down. It was rebuilt into the hotel it is today. William C. Duncan purchased the hotel and converted it into a residence in 1846. In 1864, Tobias Wetzel turned the property back into a hotel called the National Hotel. In 1912, M. M. and I. E. Shawver constructed the third floor and added an apartment to the hotel. The National Hotel name was dropped and changed to the current name of the Millheim Hotel in 1941. Then in 1982, the current owner Swartz M. Wagner, better know as “Bud,” purchased the hotel and refurbished the four dining rooms and the bedrooms.
[edit] The Restaurant
The restaurant seats around 175 people and has a salad bar that is open to all customers. Every Monday night is prime rib and buffalo wing night. Tuesday evenings, a down-home steak dinner is available for your enjoyment. Then on Wednesday nights, the special is a Pizza and Pitcher deal that has become a mid-week social event for many friends and family gatherings. Every Thursday night seafood selections are featured. Approximately every four weeks during the season, the current owner, Bud Wagner, travels to New England to select lobsters that are served on select Thursdays. Another treat happens on the second Wednesday of the month. Richard Benninghoff, based out of State College, entertains the dining rooms with a magic show. Off of the restaurant, the hotel has a bar area that seats 40 people. It has televisions, touch screen games, a Pac-Man® machine and a dart board.
[edit] Rooms
Bedrooms for rent are located on the second and third floors. There are 19 rooms in total. Most rooms have double beds with dressers for your clothes. Rooms 1 and 2 have a door that connects the two rooms, which is nice for families with young children. There are no bathrooms inside the rooms but there are two common bathrooms on the second floor and one on the third. There is a suite on the third floor with a living room, bedroom, and a very big walk-in closet. There are no televisions in the rooms except for the suite. On the second floor there is a balcony the length of the front of the hotel which overlooks the main road of the town, Route 45.

Down the road a few miles is Woodward Camp. When the X-Games are in session at Woodward, the Millheim Hotel is a great place to stay. In fact, in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, the U.S. Snowboarding Team stayed at the hotel. During the college football season there are a lot of people that stay at or eat at the hotel from Penn State. State College is about 40 minutes away but people have been making that ride to Millheim for quite some time now.
