[edit] Cadet and Midshipman Badges

I think this page should be kept clear of the Cadet and Midshipman badges used at the service academies. Every badge on this page has been verified from the offical instructions of the U.S. Armed Forces. Perhaps we could make such badges into a separate article? Hope thats not too much to ask, but a lot of time has gone into this page. A good rule of thumb is that the page is only for badges which appear on a active military uniform. School badges, ROTC awards, and Cadet Training awards should go somewhere else User:Husnock 14 Jul 2004

[edit] Air Corps Badges

Stand by for AAC and USAAF Badges. I plan to write a single article covering all of them, complete with pictures, mush as I did with the Aviator Badge. No need to make a separate article for every obsolete WWII Air badge. The same goes for the Navy Surface Warfare and Submarine Pins. One article a piece will cover them all. User:Husnock 15 Jul 2004

[edit] New Articles

Surface Warfare section now opened. Enjoy! -User:Husnock 24 Jul 04

[edit] Navy Badges.

This link goes to the U.S. Navy Uniform regulations. It has the specifications and appearence for all Navy badges. Mtnerd 16:31, 7 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] "Everybody's an Expert"

To those who have followed and supported this page, (and its sister page Awards and decorations of the United States military), beware that I have seen several "experts" making changes to some of the articles. Most are from unlogged user IP address accounts and the changes have consisted of adding unneccesary grammer, moving images, and adding "extra info" not based on any military evidence.

Warranted changes are MORE than welcome. I am always searching for extra info on military awards, badges, etc. But, we all know what I am talking about. That person surfing the web Saturday night who feels they must make changes and adds nonesense to pages. To all those, I say: REVERT! -User:Husnock 8 Sep 04

[edit] Sub Badges Finished

The entire submarine warfare section is now finished. Thanks to The Epopt who started off those articles. Husnock 12 Sep 2004

[edit] Obsolete Section Complete

It is my pleasure to announce that the entire obsolete badge section is now compelte with links to articles on every military badge. Enjoy! Husnock 5 Oct 2004

[edit] Image Table Project

With things going so well over at Awards and decorations of the United States military, a grand new project has begun to incoporate an image table into this article. If anyone knows of how to make the tables look better, please share. And enjoy the results! -Husnock 3 Jan 05

[edit] Vandalism

Be advised that I just undid some vandalism on this page. Some people... Anyway, it would have been a shame to not revert to Husnock's excellent article.206.156.242.39 21:29, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Thank you!!! -Husnock 4Jan05

[edit] Completed Sections

The Defense Department, Army, and Marine Corps sections have all been completed inckluding pictures. I will work next on Navy, then Coast Guard, and last but not least the Air Force. Obsolete Badges will come along as well. Enjoy! -Husnock 8Jan05

[edit] Disambig Page

With the pictures on this page growing to lengthy numbers, what are thoughts about a disambig page and new articles for badges of each specific service? That would be a major change to the way this article has been laid out which is why I ask for opinions. Thank you, everyone! -Husnock 20Feb05

[edit] Badge/Pin versus Insignia for USN/USMC/USCG Insignia

The term "badge" in Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard terminology specifically applies to a narrow scope of items. For many items referred to as "badges" or "pins" in current Wikipedia articles, the normal term in uniform regulations is "insignia". In the Navy and the Marine Corps, for example, aviation wings are referred to as "breast insignia"; in the Coast Guard they are referred to as "qualification insignia". The only application of the term "badge" in the Coast Guard applies to items normally worn on the pocket on male uniforms: DOD service and identification badges, recruiter bades, Command Master Chief, and so on. In the Marine Corps the term "badge" is restricted to the DOD service and identification badges and marksmanship badges. In the Navy, the term is applied to a range of badges again normally worn on the male uniform pocket similar to the Coast Guard; marksmanship badges; and the sleeve insignia worn by enlisted personnel to indicate their rating, which are called "rating badges". I am bringing this up because the use of terms such as "Naval Aviator Badge" and "Surface Supply Corps Pin" is incorrect, misleading, and not in accordance with Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard Uniform Regulations, and I will change these terms when I encounter them to the correct service terminology. The actions will be based on information contained in primary sources to include Navy Uniform Regulations, Marine Corps Uniform Regulations and Coast Guard Uniform Regulations as well as other applicable service directives. In all cases I will provide documentation as to the source of my corrections. I greatly appreciate the magnificent work that Husnock has put into these articles, but I think that accuracy and precision of terminology is critical to the credibility of Wikipedia as a reference work and I will proceed to correct terms as necessary. Ray Trygstad 07:44, 23 Feb 2005 (UTC)

That sounds fine but be careful about moving articles that have a lot ofthings linking to them as this causes double redirects. Also, some of the articles have been around awhile, the Submarine insignia one comes to mind as it was written by a lot of different people, and they might come out of the woodwork if the names of the articles are changed. Also, remember, a lot of the links are "shadow names", i.e. the link is as follows "article name|shadow name" so what is displayed the page might not actually be what the article is called. Those can be fixed pretty easily
