The original Route 27 was one of the original Missouri highways. Its northern terminus was in Nodaway County at the Iowa state line, its southern terminus was at Route 1 in Savannah. In 1926, it became part of U.S. Highway 71. In the 1960s, The rest of it became Route 148 to match the designation in Iowa.
